Piano Tuning & Maintenance FAQ

Tuning & Service

How often should I have my piano tuned?
Pianos should be tuned at least once or twice a year, depending on climate, usage, and performance needs. Frequent use, seasonal changes, or recording sessions may require more frequent tunings.

Why does my piano go out of tune?
Changes in humidity and temperature cause the wood and strings to expand or contract, affecting tuning stability. Regular use and aging of the strings also contribute to tuning shifts.

What is included in a tuning service?
A standard tuning includes a full pitch adjustment to A440, minor voicing adjustments, and minor repairs as needed. If additional regulation or repairs are required, I will discuss options with you during the appointment.

How long does a tuning take?
A standard tuning typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the piano’s condition. If additional adjustments are needed, it may take longer.

My piano hasn’t been tuned in years. Will one tuning be enough?
If your piano is significantly out of tune, it may require a pitch raise (a two-step tuning process) to stabilize before fine-tuning can be completed. I can assess this during your appointment.

Repairs & Maintenance

Do you offer repairs in addition to tuning?
Yes! I handle sticking keys, pedal issues, string replacements, action adjustments, and minor repairs. For major repairs or full restorations, I can recommend specialized technicians if needed.

What is regulation, and does my piano need it?
Regulation involves adjusting the action components to maintain touch, responsiveness, and dynamic control. If your piano feels sluggish, uneven, or unresponsive, it may benefit from regulation.

What is voicing, and how does it affect my piano’s sound?
Voicing adjusts the tone and timbre of your piano by modifying hammer density and shape. If your piano sounds too harsh or too dull, voicing can create a more balanced and expressive tone.

How much does a piano tuning cost?
My standard tuning rate is $150. Additional services such as pitch raises, voicing, or minor repairs may have separate costs, which will be discussed during your appointment.
